Brief introduction:Multinational Communique was formerly known as Church News, which was first issued on September 5th, 1868 in Shanghai and started as a religious weekly by US Supervisory Board missionary Lin Lezhi (Young John Allen). On September 5th, 1874, Church News was changed into Multinational Communique on its 301st issue and became a non-religious weekly. It was suspended on 750th issue in 1883 due to financial causes. In February, 1889, it resumed publishing as the newspaper for Christian Literature Society for China and issued on monthly basis. Lin Lezhi still acted as editor-in-chief, with foreign missionaries such as Timothy Richard and W. A. P. Martin participating in writing and editing. The circulation of the newspaper was about 4,000 copies. After Young John Allen’s death in Shanghai on May 30th, 1907, Multinational Communique was closed in July.
